World University Service (WUS) of Germany has just donated portable membrane water filters to flood-vulnerable areas in Central Viet Nam such as Da Nang, Thua Thien - Hue, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai. The devices that were transported free of charge by Viet Nam's national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines from Germany to Ha Noi, and is being distributed to schools in the four central coastal Vietnamese localities as mentioned above.

VNA correspondent in Germany quoted Ph.D. Kambiz Ghawami, the President of WUS, as saying: “The State of Hessen, which has had a close cooperative relationship with Viet Nam for more than 3 decades, along with individual donors, has financial support for WUS in the short term so we can provide 30 (Portable Aqua Unit for Livesaving) PAUL water filters for schools in the central Vietnam localities that are highly vulnerable to the floods”.

Each PAUL water filtration system filters 1,200 liters of water per day, equivalent to the ability to provide three liters of potable water per day for at least 400 people.

According to the WUS President, Thanks to PAUL, many schools will be provided with drinking water. Clean drinking water is essential, especially for schools in mountainous and remote areas of Vietnam, to help prevent serious diseases on stomach, diarrhea, typhoid and cholera. PAUL not only supports the implementation of Goal 6 'Clean water and sanitation' in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - SDG 2030 but also gives many children the right to go to school.

Solidarity is a special bond between Viet Nam and Germany and this has proved especially effective in challenging times. When there was a serious shortage of in the COVID-19 outbreak in Germany in April 2020, the Vietnamese government as well as the Vietnamese community in Germany actively helped us. WUS has distributed more than 120,000 donated Viet Nam-donated masks to hospitals and social protection facilities in 16 German states. Currently, WUS is supporting people in Central Viet Nam to install water filters.

In recent years, WUS has provided a total of 350 water purifiers in Viet Nam, meaning that over 140,000 students, teachers and parents are provided with clean drinking water every day.

PAUL is a portable aquatic device invented by Professor Dr. Franz-Bernd Frechen at the University of Kassel in Hesse. This device can treat water with filters and membranes, so it saves resources, does not use chemicals or electricity, and especially it does not rely on experts for  operations.
