As many as 100 representatives from departments, branches, units and localities, along with fishermen, small traders, experts and scientists across Da Nang, on Wednesday, attended a workshop on ensuring environmental sanitation at the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf and Port, Son Tra District.

After 15 years of implementing the project on building Da Nang into an environmentally friendly city, the environmental pollution situation at the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf and Port has been improved significantly. The place is no longer a "hot spot" for environmental pollution in the city, but it is considered a point of long-term environmental pollution.

The city is drastically rolling out measures to completely resolve persistent environmental pollution at the Tho Quang area by 2025 in a bid to realise its goal of becoming a dynamic fishing port and a major fishery logistics centre associated with the Hoang Sa fishing ground.

During the event, representatives from the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations, plus experts and scientists, raised awareness of environmental protection among fishermen, residents and small businesses operating at the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf and Port.

Along with that, administrative fines for individuals and enterprises caught violating regulations related to environmental protection were presented.

A representative of the Da Nang Fisheries Association said that about 70% of the environmental pollution at the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf and Port has been resolved compared to 10 years ago.

However, the unit requested relevant agencies to maintain communications work on environmental protection and deploy it synchronously, continuously, regularly, in diverse forms.

The Management Board of the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf and Port stressed the need for the city to propose ministries, branches and the central government to have regulations on environmental sanitation management as well as synchronously carry out wastewater collection from fishing vessels.

The city needs to continue to support funding to bid for environmental cleaning in the water surface area and embankment of the wharf; and strengthen management, inspection and strict handling of environmental violations.

Heed will be on removing shipbuilding and repair industries and fishmeal trading out of the area, aiming to reduce environmental pollution, and build fishing ports associated with trade and tourism development, he emphasised.
