Helping the poor enjoy a happy Lunar New Year

To help all residents and all families across Da Nang enjoy a happy Lunar New Year (Tet), the Fatherland Front Committees at all levels across the city are launching the program ‘Spring of Love - the Lunar New Year 2024 (the Year of the Dragon) which will begin on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in a bid to call for resources and supports from individuals and organizations for the poor and disadvantaged households in the city.

Chairwoman of Cam Le District’s Khue Trung Ward Chapter Hoang Thi Kim Oanh remarked that on January 30, the Ward Chapter and its member organizations will work with the Ward authorities to organize the ‘Tet Market of Love - the Year of the Dragon’ which will feature 8 booths introducing Vietnamese products to local consumers. To mark this occasion, 698 gifts valued at VND 500,000 each will be offered to local families living in difficult circumstances in an effort to help them celebrate a joyful and happy Tet. Funding for these gifts comes from the "For the Poor" Fund and contributions from philanthropists and businesses in the ward.

According to Chairman of Lien Chieu District’s Hoa Khanh Bac Ward Nguyen Van Trung, the Ward Chapter will give more than 700 gifts worth VND 500,000 each to local poor and near-poor households, and social policy households, along with those facing unexpected difficulties.

“With one month left until the Lunar New Year 2024, the ward has identified a list of those facing unexpected difficulties, along with immigrant students and workers who are unable to return home to celebrate Tet with their families in order to call for supports and resources for them. As of January 12, the Ward Chapter had mobilized 380 more gifts valued at VND 500,000 each to support disadvantaged people," Mr. Trung said.

Recently, the Lien Chieu District’s Hoa Minh Ward Chapter has worked with the Hai Van Border Guard Station and the Sympathy Volunteer Club to launch the fourth edition of the ‘Border Spring Warms the Hearts of People living in the Maritime Border Areas - The Tet for the Poor’ program in the context of approaching Lunar New Year 2024.

To mark this occasion, 200 gifts of food and necessities worth VND 450,000 each, along with 40 cash gifts valued at VND 500,000 have been offered to social policy families, and poor households, plus the beneficiaries of the ‘Helping Poor Children’s Education’ and ‘Adopted children of the Border Guard Station’ programs in Lien Chieu District.

According to Vice Chairwoman of Lien Chieu District Chapter of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee Lu Thi Kim Hoa, the District will give 4,263 gifts valued at VND 500,000 each to poor and disadvantaged households across 5 wards on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024.

“The District’s fund-raising campaign has received a positive response from donors. By the end of January 15, the District had raised funds from businesses and philanthropists to buy more than 500 gifts worth VND 500,000 each for the poor and disadvantaged people. The district will continue its efforts to call for resources to support those in need," Mrs. Hoa said.

Vice Chairman of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee Duong Dinh Lieu said that nearly VND 10 billion from the city’s ‘For the Poor’ Fund and its budget will be spent on implementing the ‘Spring of Love - the Lunar New Year 2024 (the Year of the Dragon) to support near-poor households, those in especially difficult circumstances or facing unexpected difficulties.

In detail, 17,617 Tet gifts valued at VND 500,000 each will be given to these people. Furthermore, another 800 cash gifts worth VND 500,000 will be offered to poor members of 8 municipal associations, namely the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, the Association of the Blind, the Association of People with Disabilities, the Patriotic Prisoners Association, and the Association of Supporting People with Disabilities and Orphans, the Association of Former Youth Volunteers, the Former Teachers’ Association, and the Elderly Association.

Moreover, the city will visit and give 421 gifts to the Co Tu ethnic minority people in Hoa Bac and Hoa Phu communes, as well as give gifts to the Chinese Vietnamese (also known as Hoa people or ethnic Chinese in Viet Nam) in Hoa Ninh Commune, all in Hoa Vang Suburban District, before the Lunar New Year.

“The Fatherland Front Committees at all levels across the city are calling for resources and supports for the poor. Therefore, the contributions and support of benefactors and organizations will contribute to helping the poor celebrate a joyful and happy Tet. In its efforts to demonstrate the nation's morality of ‘Loving others as you love yourself’, the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee wants to give Tet gifts to the needy on the occasion of the Lunar New Year with the aim of spreading  love and kindness in the community,” Mr. Lieu remarked.
