Da Nang's young people and their need for coffee shops staying open around the clock
After dinner, Tran Vu Minh Thanh, a second- year student of the University of Economics under the University of Da Nang often takes his laptop to a coffee shop about 1 kilometer from home to do group exercises. Over the past year and a half, the coffee shop has become a frequent place for Thanh and his friends when they need to study in groups because of its spacious, quiet space, good internet speed, air conditioning. Especially, the coffee shop stays open around the clock for guests.

The night coffee trend
“On average, I study and work at the coffee shop about 10 times a month. Even though I have my own room at home, still prefer going out for studying. I love studying from coffee shops instead of staying at home. I find it difficult to overconme laziness while studying at home as my desk is next to my bed," Thanh said.
Meanwhile, Le Hoai Nam who is an IT engineer working remotely for a foreign company, chose to work from a coffee shop all night, due to his working hours in remote work, and working with teams across different time zones.
"When it's night time in our country, it's day time in their country, which is also their working hours. Sometimes there are online meetings or work emails, and I have to stay up all night to handle them. I often choose to sit at a coffee shop to drink a cup of black coffee in a bid to stay awake all nighh for work, and then make up for lost sleep on the next day," Nam said.
Nam and Thanh's stories reveal the reasons why young people choose coffee shops to work or study all night, even though they have to spend money on drinking coffee. To meet the demand for nighttime coffee shop from young people, the coffee shop model for working and studying (co-working space) has been becoming more popular and diverse across Da Nang.
In their efforts to catch up this trend, many coffee shops in the city have adopted the above-mentioned model to serve groups of customers who like to sit late at night. Included are Trinh Coffee under the Pham Hong Thai branch which opens until 1:30a.m, Ge Coffee which opens until 3:00 a.m., iCoffee and Zone6 which stay open around clock. The common point of these shops is to arrange many high tables and chairs, working corners for customers, along with electrical outlets. Furthermore, many shops also have separate spaces for group work, mini seminars, workshops, and other events.
Opened in June 2023, Hi4 Coffee & Workspace located in Bac My An Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, attracts many young customers. The shop offers drinks with an impressive and creatively designed space to meet the demand for studying and working from individuals and groups.
Balancing heath and studies or work
From the perspective of young people often drinking coffee while runing a coffee shop, Mr. Tran Gia Phat, the manager of the Ket Coffee Shop located in Ai Nghia Town, Dai Loc District, Quang Nam Province said that young people in Da Nang tend to go out at night as they want to enjoy nightlife, perhaps due to hot weather conditions in the daytime, changed lifestyle or simply loving nightlife.
"Young customers often come to coffee shops overnight in order to complete their assignments or their work on time. Besides, many people who come home late from going out also stop by to chat with friends before going to bed. ", Mr. Phat said.
Apart from benefits from the enjoyment of nightlife experience in Da Nang, there are effects of nightlife activitiy on health.
According to student Phat, he used to go to a coffee shop to study with his friends. He said that that he finds inspiration in studying with his friends at coffee shop while home feels cramped when studying. However, his health has deteriorated after a long time staying up all night. Sitting all night to drink coffee for whatever purpose requires a balance between work or study and health. Frequently staying up all night at coffee shops can affect your health and budget.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Linh, an office worker, said that he also used to go to coffee shops to work at night. Coffee shop is really an ideal place for young people to work or study. However, young people should make suitable arrangements and plans to work and study effectively during the daytime in order to avoid staying up all night that is not good for their health.
“If you have to go to a coffee shop to work, you should try to choose one that fits your criteria, which is quiet, comfortable, easy to concentrate and affordable, as well as avoid sitting in an unsuitable place, which costs both money and time while the work is not as effective as desired," Mr. Linh remarked.
