As one of the largest traditional markets in the centre of Da Nang, the Han Market has been increasingly becoming a popular shopping spot for both domestic and foreign tourists who want to experience local specialties and culture. Due to the large number of people and vehicles, traffic around the area is unstable. However, this situation has gradually improved in recent times.

Less chaotic and congested traffic

As observed by our reporters, some major streets near the Han Market such as Tran Phu, Bach Dang, Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc have recently recorded many changes in the traffic situation compared to before.

Mrs. Le Thi Cuc, a small trader in the market, said that since the traffic rearrangement, traffic congestion on the streets around the Han Market has been significantly reduced. In particular, the pedestrian space for people and tourists is more convenient, airy and safer.

Mr. Tran Thai Thuat, a ride-hailing driver who regularly transports visitors and shoppers to the Han Market, shared that the traffic flow separation around the Han has brought positive results, including minimising the risk of road traffic accidents, ensuring safety for pedestrians and vehicles, and making business activities more convenient.

Recently, the functional sectors have strengthened guidance, propaganda, regulation to ensure traffic safety and order, and restore urban order on streets around the Han Market, especially on the one-way roads on Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc. Thanks to that, the situation of drivers violating the rules on the roads around the Han Market has decreased significantly.

More reasonable traffic arrangement

In December 2023, the Da Nang Department of Transport issued a document on prohibiting parking on a section of Tran Phu Street between its intersections with Phan Dinh Phung and Nguyen Van Linh between 6:30 am and 8:30 am, 11:00 am and noon, and 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The move aims to ensure order and reduce traffic congestion on Tran Phu Street.

Along with that, the unit piloted a plan to organise one-way traffic on Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets from March 25 - 31, 2024 from 10:00 am to noon, and from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Also, one-way traffic is applied to sections of Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets stretching from their intersections with Bach Dang to Tran Phu streets during the aforementioned peak hours.

Director of the municipal Department of Transport Bui Hong Trung said that after the pilot period, based on the assessment of the traffic situation and opinions from people, local authorities and specialised agencies, the Department has adjusted the time for stopping and parking bans on Tran Phu Street, and organised one-way traffic on the routes more reasonably. The purpose is to facilitate transportation, and pick-up and drop-off of passengers around the Han Market, and to ensure traffic safety and urban order.

Currently, the parking ban on a section of Tran Phu Street between its intersections with Phan Dinh Phung and Nguyen Van Linh streets is applied from 11:00am to noon, and 5:00pm to 6:30pm instead of 6:30am to 8:30am, 11:00am to noon and 4:00pm to 7:00pm as before.

Additionally, one-way traffic is applied to sections of Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets stretching from their intersections with Bach Dang and Tran Phu streets. Tourist coaches, with each offering 30 seats or more, are prohibited from travelling on these streets between 10:30m and noon, and between 4:30pm and 7:00am.

At the same time, bus and tourist coach stops are placed on Bach Dang Street and the maximum time for stopping, and picking up and dropping off passengers is 5 minutes.

These effective solutions need to be maintained to ensure traffic safety and order in this area.
