In recent years, the waste classification models at source have been deployed synchronously to each family, village, and hamlet in Hoa Vang District, Da Nang.

Classifying solid waste at source not only reduces the volume of waste that needs to be buried, but also generates revenue for organisations and associations at all levels to carry out social volunteer activities, thereby contributing to the effective implementation of the Law on Environmental Protection and important criteria in building new-style rural areas and advanced new-style rural areas.

Replication of effective models

According to the Women's Union (WU) of Hoa Vang District, the model of domestic waste classification at source has been replicated in communes of Hoa Chau, Hoa Tien, Hoa Phuoc, Hoa Phong, Hoa Son and Hoa Lien.

To effectively deploy the model, the district’s WU has coordinated with the local Office of Natural Resources and Environment to organise a training conference to replicate the model "Classifying and collecting recyclable waste, building a social security fund" for 138 officials. The WU organisations of 11 communes have launched 11 points of the skillful mass mobilisation model in 11 villages.

The WU organisations at all levels across the district has organised 40 points of propaganda on waste classification at the source and the movements "Anti-plastic waste" and "Green roof".

At the same time, 230 bins for sorting recyclable waste, 50 shopping baskets, and 50 bins for making organic fertilizer have been given to WU members.

Members of 113 village WUs regularly collect waste sorted at the source and plastic waste, build operating funds, implement social security programmes, and visit and give gifts to women and children in difficult circumstances.

Chairwoman of the WU of Hoa Phong Commune Nguyen Thi Thuong said that the union has proposed that the People's Committee of the commune support 13 green roofs for 13 WU organisations of the commune to collect waste. All members have promoted the model well and organised many campaigns to collect scrap at the green roofs.

Accordingly, since the beginning of the year, the WU organisations have launched 3 waste collection campaigns and raised VND 25 million. With the fund and donations from benefactors, 613 gifts, totalling VND45.2 million, have been presented to pupils with good academic performance.

Meanwhile, Chairwoman of the Hoa Tien Commune’s WU Ho Thi Lai said over the past time, cadres and members of WU have effectively implemented the model with many specific activities such as a green - clean - beautiful Sunday, green roof model, and scrap and leftover food collection.

Bringing many practical effects

After one year of implementation, the model has brought practical effects and created positive responses among cadres, WU members and the community. Up to now, 113 WU organisations in Hoa Vang District have participated in implementing the model.

From the collected funds, WU organisations in the district have supported 28 orphans in difficult circumstances under the "Godmother" programme, with a budget of VND123 million; presented 813 gifts to poor, sick members, disabled children, and orphans with a total amount of nearly VND 240 million.

Through the implementation of the aforementioned model, WU members have maintained and implemented domestic waste classification at households well, whilst people have gradually raised awareness of waste classification at home, thereby contributing to environmental protection and carrying out social welfare activities. This also has brought practical effects to the family life of WU members, spreading widely throughout the commune with profound humanity, and attracting the participation of a large number of WU members and local people.

Chairwoman of the Hoa Vang District’s WU Tran Thi Kim said "Through the model, awareness about environmental protection has been gradually changed, creating habits of collecting, classifying and treating waste at households among WU officials and members. Thanks to this, the amount of waste released into the environment has been significantly reduced, and the effectiveness of implementing the Law on Environmental Protection has been improved. This actively contributes to the implementation of the campaign "Building a Family of 5 Nos, 3 Cleans" and the building of new-style rural areas, and advanced new-style rural areas in the locality".
