Women the world over enjoy having a manicure and pedicure. Like having a new hair style, it gives them confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. For those who are lucky enough to live in Da Nang there are many nail salons to choose from. One which has become increasingly popular, particularly with the ex-pats who live and work here, is Thy Thy’s Nail Salon on Hoang Dieu Street, which is owned by 47-year-old Doan Nu Kim Chung (Thy Thy).
Creating beautiful nails runs in Thy’s family. Her brother and sister have both owned nail salons in Canada for more than 20 years, and it was Thy’s brother who taught her how to apply and care for acrylic nails. She then went to Ho Chi Minh City to learn nail art, which is the practice of painting decorative designs on nails. Nail art is especially popular among Thy’s Vietnamese customers who like having colourful and intricate designs to accessorise a special occasion outfit.
Thy(r) with staff members |
Since Thy opened her salon 10 years ago, she has seen a steady increase in the number of foreign clients. Regular ex-pat customers are from the UK, Australia, the USA, Korea, Japan and Spain, and they also bring their visiting relatives and friends to experience an excellent manicure and pedicure. Janet Marshall from the UK says “My sister lives and works in Da Nang and I visit her every year. Thy Thy’s is the first place I go when I arrive, and the last place I go before I leave. I love the skill and care that goes into every nail – and the range of OPI nail polish colours is fantastic. My colleagues in England are always impressed with the manicure and pedicure I take home with me, and are amazed by how long my nails stay looking beautiful. If I have the same treatment in England it costs 10 times as much, and doesn’t last anywhere near as long.”
As well as nail care, the salon offers a wide range of waxing services and facial treatments. Thy also offers manicure and pedicure training courses at her salon. Most of the trainees are women, although some are men, and they are usually aiming to become professional nail technicians so that they can pursue a career in this field in Viet Nam or abroad. The courses are very popular with local residents, and run for between 1 and 3 months depending on the student’s ability.
Manicure and pedicure |
The salon is open from 8.30am – 7pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8.30am – 1pm on Sunday. There are 4 full-time members of staff who all learned their skills under Thy’s professional guidance, and each of them is highly-skilled, thorough, and professional. So, the next time you need a little pampering and a beautiful manicure and pedicure, call in to Thy’s salon. You won’t be disappointed!
