A very small restaurant in alley K112/34 Tran Cao Van in Da Nang’s Thanh Khe District has a very special name - ‘Banh Canh Am Phu’ which translates as ‘Hell Rice Spaghetti’.  The reason is that the restaurant is only open from midnight until around 2.00am the next day.

The small restaurant is ideal for anyone who finishes work very late at night, such as sanitation workers and porters at the Da Nang Railway Station.

The ‘Banh canh’ (rice spaghetti) served there is made from hand-kneaded rice flour, which makes the spaghetti extra chewy and soft.  The dish is served with tasty pork bone broth and steamed or fried fish spring rolls.  Most notably, the broth is stewed for many hours to ensure the moreish flavour of the dish without the need to add too much monosodium glutamate, sugar or other seasonings.

Thanks to its unusual opening hours and the delicious dish, the venue is attracting a great deal of attention from local gourmets.  Especially in colder weather, the tasty and hot ‘banh canh’ satisfies the appetite of many a diner.
