public clinic

A healthcare facility usually managed by a nurse.  It gives provisional diagnosis and treatments to patients in a particular local area.  If the illness or injury seems to be more serious, the patient will be taken to a higher-level hospital.

Public clinic/

Private clinic

- A public clinic is a health establishment for healthcare services supplied by nurses, therapists and specialists. A private clinic is a medical office individually established by a doctor.

- Clinics are just for outpatients because they don’t have facilities for inpatients.

- For example: paediatric hospital, eye hospital, cancer hospital, dermatology hospital.

General hospital

- Large-scale hospital, where most diseases and injuries can be tested and treated.

- Consists of different functional departments, each of which has its own specialists.  In the case of a disease which is difficult to diagnose or treat, the specialists of the different departments will collaborate with each other to carry out the treatment.

- Has the necessary facilities for emergencies, medical examinations, X-rays and enhanced treatments.

Classified by ownership

- Public hospital - owned and managed by the government.

- Private hospital - founded and managed by the private sector.

Recently, in addition to Western medicine, Viet Nam has also focused on developing Eastern medicine (traditional medicine). There are traditional medicine hospitals where patients receive traditional therapies such as acupuncture, massage, or treatment by herbal medication. There are also traditional medicine departments at general hospitals.

Emergency situations

You can buy various kinds of general medicines, or painkillers, for common complaints such as flu, coughs, and indigestion at local pharmacies.

When an accident occurs, call 115 for the ambulance. A foreigner should ask the nearest Vietnamese person to call 115 to transfer the fully comprehensive information. In a 115 call, the following information should be provided: the nearest address of the place of the accident, personal number of the caller, number of victims, and the current condition of the victims. Based on that information, the centre for emergencies will send one or more groups of health workers for the most effective first-aid. The victims will be transferred to the nearest hospital, a specialised department, or the hospital that the victims are insured for.

After receiving basic treatment in the emergency room, if you need to stay in a hospital, you complete the admission procedures under the doctor’s instruction.

* Note:

When having any type of health assessment, the insured must present his/her valid insurance card and some photo ID. If the insured was transferred to a health facility in an emergency, he/she must present their insurance card before leaving the hospital, in order that all the insurance benefits can be applied.

In addition, depending on each individual case, the insured might be asked for some additional documents: evidence of transfer between hospitals if he/she was transferred from one hospital to another; or an appointment reminder if they have been requested by the health facility to have a recheck. If the insured is transferred between several hospitals, the insurance benefits will be applied to one recheck only.
