Cau Ngu Festival-Major festival for local fishermen

Date: Two days in the middle of the 2nd lunar month.

Location: The festival is held in coastal areas such as Man Thai, Tho Quang, Thanh Loc Dan, Xuan Ha, an Hoa Hiep.

Meaning: The festival shows the people’s respect for the whale, and their wish for a prosperous and safe fishing season.

Activity:

The festival usually includes the traditional games of the coastal regions, such as boat regattas, swimming competitions, football matches, etc. The musical programme traditionally includes ‘tuong’, ‘ho khoan’ and ‘ba trao’ singing, typical musical features of the Cau Ngu festival (ba: nam, trao: cheo do). They are sung to express the solidarity among the fishermen from the same ship, and to help them overcome difficulties and catch a lot of fish.
