Reunification Day

DA NANG Today
Published: April 26, 2014

In the history of Viet Nam, April 30th 1975 was the day when the Sai Gon government fell, ending the Viet Nam War and leading to the liberation of Viet Nam's southern part.

Every year since then, the country has celebrated this day as a commemoration of the reunification of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam in the North and the Republic of Viet Nam in the South into the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam as we know it today.

Before this special event actually arrives, competitions relating to the origin and meaning of Reunification Day are held to draw public attention.  Over the week prior to April 30th, streets in the larger cities like Ha Noi, Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are eye-catchingly decorated with colourful banners, flags and neon lights.  Also, celebration areas are prepared - it could be a place for a parade, or a stage for a national live show.

When Reunification Day dawns, major cities are at their quietest as people return to their homelands to enjoy the day with their beloved families.  In front of their houses, there are Viet Nam’s national flags proudly waving in the air.  On television, related memorial programmes or music shows of victorious songs about the Viet Nam War are broadcast.  Especially in Ho Chi Minh City, at the beginning of the day there are parades involving many participants adding colour to the main streets.  However, you need to be an ‘early bird’ to witness or be a part of this activity.
