Together with ‘pho’ (noodle soup served with beef or chicken in a hot bowl of broth), ‘banh mi’ (Vietnamese baguettes) has made it into the list of top Vietnamese foods that you absolutely must-try in Viet Nam.

There are many kinds of baguettes including chicken, roasted and grilled pork, omelette, grilled pork patty, and ham. They can be bought at small stalls along streets or in alleys across Viet Nam.

A baguette, however, has very different flavours in different parts of Viet Nam, and Da Nang baguette is considered the best because of its special recipe.

In the traditional version, baguettes explode with fresh ingredients, such as barbecued pork, spicy chili, a bundle of fresh herbs and yolky mayonnaise.

Now, you can try a new version of baguettes - ‘banh mi heo quay sot trung muoi’ (Vietnamese baguettes stuffed with roasted pork and salted egg yolk sauce) in Da Nang at the Huy Phe baguette store located at 24-26 Le Hong Phong Street in Hai Chau District. This type of baguettes is now increasingly becoming popular with Da Nang people because of its special recipe and its taste being hard to resist.

Prepared in a matter of seconds, the ‘banh mi heo quay sot trung muoi’ comes topped with an abundance of herbs: Vietnamese mint (which tastes like coriander), spring onions, basil, and a spicy helping of homemade chili sauce.

What makes this type of baguettes special is the crispy roasted pork belly and homemade salted egg yolk sauce.

“Another important thing to make this type of baguettes more special is the baguette crust. It has to be fresh and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside”, Mr Huy Phan, the owner of the Huy Phe baguette store remarked.

In addition to ‘banh mi heo quay sot trung muoi’, Mr Huy Phan also introduces a bigger menu, including baguettes stuffed with shredded dried beef, dried chicken meat, and an omelette, to his customers.

‘Banh mi heo quay sot trung muoi’ is a must try for all of foodies who are on the hunt for new flavours. It might sound weird for people who are not even familiar with salted egg yolk sauce, but hey it’s all about trying new things right.

You can buy this type of baguettes at the Huy Phe baguette store between 6.30am and 10.00pm daily.

Mr Huy Phan plans to open 3 new stores in Da Nang before the Tet Festival 2021.
