Myanmar's traditional Thingyan Water Festival kicked off in the former capital city of Yangon on April 13 with people starting to splash water on each other.

The opening ceremonies of the festival took place in the morning at two major water throwing areas in Yangon Region Government and Yangon City Hall.

More than 5,000 police have been deployed at main venues to ensure the safety for all revelers during the event.

Thingyan Water Festival is the biggest one among Myanmar 's 12 seasonal festivals throughout the year. This year's event will run for four days through April 16.
