Russia’s state-run nuclear firm Rosatom and Thailand’s Institute of Nuclear Technology on September 23 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy.

The signing ceremony took place on the margins of the 58 th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna .

Under the deal, Rosatom will support Thailand in the areas of fundamental and applied research, nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, and personnel training.

Both sides agreed to set up a joint working group to define specific projects that facilitate the building of nuclear power in Thailand .

Thailand kick-started research activities for nuclear programmes over the past three decades in an effort to satisfy the increasing demand for energy.

Its first research centre for nuclear and atomic power plants is scheduled to be built in Chonburi province - 100km southeast of Bangkok.
