Indonesia: thousands evacuated due to floods, landslides

Landslides and floods in West Sumatra province, Indonesia, on February 8 have left five people dead, two people missing and forced over 4,000 others to flee their homes.

West Sumatra Disaster Management Agency said heavy downpours have submerged many district in the area in the last few days. Four bodies have been found in Solok district and two others are being searched for.

The agency also said the floods and land landslides have devastated Solok city and other districts including Solok Selatan, Limapuluh Kota and Agam. The disasters affected about 6,000 people with over 4,000 of them having to take shelters at higher areas.

A bridge was destroyed and over 100 hectares paddy rice field were inundated under water.

The military, police, the Red Cross and those from the local disaster management agency and search and rescue agency are carrying out emergency relief efforts.
