Myanmar’s 430 lawmakers of the House of Representatives (Lower House) arrived for their first day of work in the capital Nay Pyi Taw on February 1.
They elected U Win Myint of the National League for Democracy (NLD) as Speaker of the chamber and U Ti Khun Myat of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) as Deputy Speaker.
The House of Nationalities (Upper House) is expected to convene on February 3.
The NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, marked a landslide victory in the November 8, 2015 general election, winning some 80 percent of the parliamentary seats.
The new parliament, which began its five-year term from 2016, is the country's first democratically elected government in over half a century.
