Cross-border route to link India, Myanmar, Thailand
India, Thailand and Myanmar are negotiating building an 1,400-kilometre highway to link India with Southeast Asia by land.
The planned highway starts in the eastern region of India from Moreh city to Myanmar's Tamu city.
The road will help in the transportation of goods and development of small- and medium-sized enterprises in North East India, said Indian Ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi.
The highway will also exemplifies India’s “Act East” policy, the Ambassador added.
Upgrades to 73 bridges in Myanmar built more than seven decades ago are underway with funding from the Indian government to allow vehicles to cross the highway safely, he said.
The highway could be opened to traffic upon completion of the repair work in 18 months.
