According to initial reports, the quake destroyed dozens of houses while forcing locals to flee to safe shelters.

Local officials said that although there were no reports of serious casualties, water outages and power blackouts were recorded in Lanao del Sur, 800 kilometres south of Manila.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that the earthquake was felt in 16 cities and towns in the south, including major urban centres like Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

On April 8, two earthquakes with magnitude of more than 5.0 also shook Bantagas province on Luzon island, causing large-scale power cuts.
