Cambodia begins communal election campaigns

Cambodian parties on May 20 launched campaigns for communal elections which are scheduled to take place on June 4.

As many as 94,595 candidates from 12 political parties will compete for the 11,572 seats in rural and urban precincts.
The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition National Rescue Party (NRP) have candidates who are running for every seat in the 1,646 communes.
The two-week campaign will end one day before the communal elections.
In the 2012 communal elections, the CPP won more than 70 percent of the votes and secured 1,592 of 1,633 communal seats.
