Phichit’s Governor Wirasak Wichitsaengsi said laboratory test results had confirmed that there were 11 infections since July 1 and they were all being treated.

Health officials have sent special teams to kill mosquitoes in the region to stop the mosquito-borne virus from further spreading.

Wirasak asked people not to worry too much as there were Zika cases in Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai before.

He also asked whoever has a high fever or similar symptoms to take a blood test in hospital.

Zika virus is mainly transmitted through the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, blood transmission and sexual intercourse, causing fever, sore eyes and a rash. Pregnant women infected with the virus might give birth to babies with microcephaly - a deformation that leads to abnormally small brains and heads.

Currently, there is no vaccine or specific medication for the virus.
