Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad have agreed to cooperate in addressing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s nuclear and missile development as well as the abduction of Japanese citizens.

Addressing a joint press conference after their meeting on 12 June, PM Abe affirmed to closely cooperate with the Malaysian leader to send out a powerful message to the DPRK.

The statement was made in the context that US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un had a summit in Singapore.

In an attempt to boost bilateral cooperation, PM Abe said Japan will upgrade Malaysia's “Look East Policy” to promote education exchange, human resource development and the transfer of science technologies.

In reply, Malaysian PM Mahathir hailed the Japanese PM’s resolve.
