Thailand’s Ombudsman Office on 14 March announced that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is qualified to run in the upcoming election.

Speaking at a press conference, Ombudsman Office Secretary-General Raksakecha Chaechai said the Election Commission’s nomination of Prayut as a PM candidate is legal.

The general election is scheduled to be held on 24 March. This will be the first general election in the country since the military coup in 2014.

A total of 68 candidates have been verified by the polling agency to run for the post of prime minister. The election also attracts the Pheu Thai Party of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra and the Democrat Party of former PM Abhisit Vejjajiva.
