5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes central Indonesia

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted off Kupang district, the Indonesian central province of East Nusa Tenggara, on January 15.

According to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, the quake struck at 2:55pm (Jakarta time) with the epicenter 64 km east of the province and a depth of 10km under the seabed.
Minutes later, a 5.1-magnitude quake hit the country's easternmost province of Papua with a depth of 10 km.
Indonesia is frequently hit by quakes as it sits on a quake-prone zone of "the Pacific Ring of Fire”.
