On 23 July, Ms Dao Thi Thu Hien, a visitor from Ha Noi, posted a complaint on Facebook about being overcharged, along with a soft copy of the over 6 million VND bill she had been asked to pay for her meal at the restaurant on 21 July.  She insisted that the restaurant had forced its customers to pay much more than its displayed prices, and she had fallen victim to the scam.

Like other seafood eateries along the coast roads, the Muoi Do Restaurant has a large aquarium filled with live fish and seafood.  The customers, accordingly, can choose their meal live from the water, have it cooked, and then served at the table within a few minutes.  The ingredients are very fresh and of the highest quality because the customers pick them live.

The restaurant’s manager, Ms Tran Dieu Linh, said that the items that customers choose, for instance live fish, are always sold at a per kilo price, not by number.  However, according to Ms Hien’s bill, her dish of ‘ca chim’ (Piaractus) was priced according the number of fish (3), thereby confusing the customer.

Ms Hien was also charged 120,000 VND and 50,000 VND for the plates of ‘thit ram’ (caramelised fried pork with sugar) and ‘trung chien’ (fried eggs) respectively, whilst their displayed prices at this venue are only 100,000 VND and 30,000 VND respectively.

It was concluded that the restaurant had violated the national government’s regulations about pricing, and it will now be fined in accordance with national law.
