Tourism sector to focus on expanding into new overseas tourist markets
Between January and March, Da Nang has seen a dramatic increase in the number of international visitors.
Over recent years, the city has welcomed many foreign tourists, the majority of them from Northeast Asia.
There has been a significant increase in the numbers of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai visitors every year. Most notably, last year saw a boom of Chinese visitors, accounting for 20% of the total number of foreign visitors to the city, and China is now the city’s top overseas market.

However, Da Nang mainly attracts middle-class tourists, and their spending in the city is only between 1,000 and 1,500 USD per person over an average 10-day stay. Currently, the figures are showing signs of a significant decline due to the long-lasting global economic downturn.
Furthermore, the city’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism, relaxation tourism, and eco-tourism might have great potential for attracting more visitors from both home and abroad, but these types of tourism are seasonal.
As a result, top priority is to be given to attracting more Asian and Far Eastern tourists between April and October, and Northern European and Americans from October to next April.
In addition to its established tourist markets, the city should pay special attention to expanding into new ones, especially Northern Europe and America. This will help the city to diversify its international tourist markets, and increase local travel agents’ competitiveness against the foreign ones which are dominating the inbound market.
