Shortcomings in local logistics sector pointed out
Representatives from around 100 logistics businesses nationwide, and some from trade promotion organisations and transport associations in Japan, Thailand and Laos, recently discussed ways to promote investment into the development of logistics services in Da Nang. In a frank way, they pointed out several shortcomings in the performance of the logistics sector in the city, and in Viet Nam as a whole.
Mr Yoshitaka Kurihara, Senior Investment Advisor from the Japan External Trade Organisation in Ho Chi Minh (JETRO Ho Chi Minh), noted that the current transport infrastructure is the largest limitation in the national logistics industry.
The Director General of Da Nang Port, Mr Nguyen Huu Sia, remarked that there is a lack of synchronous connections between seaports, roads, railways and airways. This lengthens the transport time which results in an increase in transportation costs and the ineffective preservation of goods.
Some participants suggested that the city's authorities should set up a municipal steering board for promoting the development of the local logistics sector as soon as possible. The main reason suggested was that the logistics sector is an interdisciplinary service which involves many aspects and establishes links between the city and domestic and foreign localities.
The focus should be on building a system of warehouses for logistics services on the city’s major transport axes which can easily be reached from seaports nationwide.
