Illegal effluent discharge at Hoa Khanh IP needs resolving

According to the city’s Industrial Zone Infrastructure Development and Exploitation Company (Daizico), to date 140 of the 151 businesses operating in Da Nang’s Hoa Khanh Industrial Park (IP) have had their own wastewater treatment systems connected to the IP’s wastewater collection system.

Wastewater discharged from the businesses is preliminarily treated at their own wastewater collection systems and is then released into the dedicated Hoa Khanh wastewater treatment plant for further treatment.  The plant is now being operated by the Central Region branch of the Ha Noi Urban Environment One Member Limited Company (URENCO).

However, the IP's wastewater collection system has seriously deteriorated, and therefore some businesses operating in the IP have been illegally discharging their untreated industrial effluent into nearby areas.

Recently, the municipal Department of Natural Resources and the Environment has tested wastewater samples from 9 businesses in the IP.  Three of the businesses were given administrative fines for violating the city’s effluent discharge standards, whilst the others were reminded of their obligations.

The release of untreated effluent into the environment by some businesses in the IP has caused severe environmental pollution in residential areas nearby, adversely affecting the health of the local people as well as their daily lives.  The most polluted hotspot is Trung Son Village in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Lien Commune and the problem here has yet to be resolved effectively.

Following recent approval by the municipal People’s Committee Chairman, Mr Huynh Duc Tho, top priority will be given to upgrading the Hoa Khanh wastewater treatment plant and increasing its capacity.  Also, a focus will be on upgrading some of the wastewater collection systems in the IP.
