Published: March 21, 2016

According to the latest survey conducted by CP Construction Consultation Joint Stock Company for Maritime Building, the total volume of cargo transported through the Da Nang port system is predicted to reach between 10.9 million and 11.9 million tons by 2020, and to hit 28.7 million tons by 2030.

In particular, the yet-to-be built Lien Chieu Port, an inland freight terminal in Lien Chieu District, is forecasted to handle from 0.9 - 1 million tons of cargo by 2020, and from 10.6 million - 11.5 million tons by 2030.

In addition, the Da Nang port system is likely to receive over 120,000 foreign cruise ship passengers per year by 2020, and that figure is expected to rise to over 250,000 per year by 2030.

In order to meet the forecasts, Da Nang will need to fully tap its great potential and strengths of geographical position, natural conditions, and links between general, container and tourism terminals of key ports in the middle central region.  This will help the city to develop its transport infrastructure system effectively.

The focus will be on developing Da Nang Port into the main port for the central region and a national-level general port.  In its long-term plan, the city will strive to turn the port into one of international-standard.

In particular, the Tien Sa Port will be expanded to handle 4,000 TEU container ships, between 30,000 and 50,000 DWT ships, and 225,000 GRT cruise ships.  By 2020, the Son Tra Port will be able to receive between 10,000 and 20,000 DWT ships, and to handle 0.3 million tons of cargo per year.

In addition, work on the Lien Chieu Port is expected to start soon after 2020, and a new international-standard terminal will be designated for handling 100,000-ton ships.

All central ministries have shown their strong support for the expansion of the port because the development of this work matches the growth strategies of the city and the region as a whole.

According to the Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Nguyen Van Cong, his ministry will grant about 3,000 billion VND for building breakwaters in Da Nang.  He suggested that the city authorities should use the city’s budget or seek public donations for the new port project.

The Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said that the 2nd phrase of the Tien Sa Port will be implemented soon to deal with possible overload problems there in future years.  The city leader also pledged that the city will make every effort to ensure that everything is ready for starting the construction of the Lien Chieu Port after 2020.
