Twenty years ago, Phuoc My Ward in Da Nang’s Son Tra District was famous for growing flowers and was home to around 500 flower-growing families.  These families specialised in planting, growing and supplying many different kinds of flowers to the city and its neighbouring localities.

Mr Phan Phu Cuu, who lives in the Phuoc Truong residential area, was one of the pioneers in the former Phuoc My flower village.  He said that his family used to own a 4,000m2 flower-growing area which was famous for gladioli with 16 funnel-shaped blooms.  Thanks to his effective business activities, he was able to comfortably raise his 7 children.

A Mr Cho had a 700m2 area which once produced various kinds of colourful flowers, including marigolds, gladioli and chrysanthemums.  However, several years ago, the municipal authorities took back the agricultural land in the ward to extend the local streets and enhance traffic infrastructure to attract more foreign investors.  As a result, Phuoc My Ward is now home to around 75 hotels and 20 guest houses, which together provide accommodation for a large number of visitors to the city.

According to the ward authorities, the tourism development in the ward has helped to promote local socio-economic progress.  Currently, Phuoc My has the lowest number of poor families in the district.
