Currently, a wide range of such products is available at supermarkets and other retailers across the city. They are sourced from such countries as the USA, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and various European countries.
Much of the imported meat, including pork, beef, chicken and lamb, is being supplied to local resorts, hotels, and restaurants.
According to the latest statistics released by the municipal Veterinary Bureau, over 7,000 tons of meat products were imported into the city in 2014, whilst the figure in 2015 was around 10,000 tons.
So far this year, the city has already imported over 11,400 tons of frozen meat, including 10,000 tons of chicken, and the total for the year is likely to reach 15,000 tons.
Imported meat is divided into 2 main types: hi-grade and mid-range. The hi-grade meats, including beef, lamb and venison, are often bought by local supermarkets and restaurants. Meanwhile, such mid-range products as cattle organs and chicken’s feet and wings are being sold at local markets.
The price per kg of beef bacon imported from the US ranges between 250,000 and 260,000 VND, whilst that of boneless prime rib is 950,000 VND. Filet mignon and lamb chops originating from Australia are priced at around 600,000 VND and up to 1 million VND per kg respectively.
Imported chicken products on sale at local markets are cheaper than domestic ones. In particular, the price per kg of chicken wings is 55,000 VND, whilst that of chicken legs ranges from 55,000 - 70,000 VND, around 10,000 VND lower than similar products originating from Viet Nam.
Between 2018 and 2025, the Viet Nam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) will lift nearly all the tariffs between its member countries. Thanks to this, the prices of imported meat products to Viet Nam will be reduced significantly.
To date, 43 meat suppliers from the European Union have been granted permits to export their products to Viet Nam. As a result, domestic customers will find it easier to buy high-quality products at reasonable prices.
