The Da Nang People’s Committee recently approved a large-scale project for bolstering the development of the city’s marine economy by 2025, with a vision towards 2030.

Under the project, the annual growth rate of cruise ship passengers arriving at the Tien Sa Port will hit between 13% and 14% during the 2016 – 2025, and 13% for the 2026 – 2030 period.

By 2025, the Da Nang Port will record an annual cargo handling capacity of 12 million and 13 million tons.  Between 2020 and 2025, the annual growth rate of container cargo will be between 10% and 15%.

In addition, the volume of processed seafood for export will grow annually between 12% and 13% by 2025, and between 8% and 10% by 2030.

The focus will on developing such new local tourism products as beach sports and cruise ship tours, and enhancing coastal tourism infrastructure, along with promoting the publicity of the national maritime sovereignty amongst tour guides for cruise ship passengers.

Furthermore, one emphasis will be on accelerating the growth of the local maritime economy, and developing the Da Nang Port into an international gateway for the central region.

In detail, the city is targeting to convert the current Tien Sa Port into a special-use port for cruise ships, and to develop the soon-to-be-built deep-sea Lien Chieu Port into a major cargo port through which general and container cargo, and liquid products will be transported.

In a similar vein, more inland container depots (ICDs) will be constructed to facilitate the import and export activities, and the transportation of cargo to recipient destinations along the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) that links Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.

With regard to the local fisheries sector, the existing Tho Quang fishing wharf will be upgraded into a first-class wharf which features an anchorage area for fishing boats to seek safe shelter from storms.

The upgrade of the wharf is indeed in line with Da Nang’s strategies for becoming one of the 5 major fishery hub in Viet Nam in the future years, with an emphasis on conducting fishing activities in the Hoang Sa fishing grounds and other national territory waters in the East Sea.

The Da Nang Junior College of Food Industry will be upgraded into a university of fisheries in the years ahead in a bid to train human resources in the aspects of fisheries, aquaculture and seafood processing.

A detailed plan will be developed to promote batches of tuna caught by Vietnamese fishermen for export to Japan, with the application of Japanese fishing technologies.

The total cost of the marine economy development project is expected to reach over 19,000 billion VND for the 2017 – 2020 period, 13,000 billion VND for the 2021 – 2025 period, and 17,000 billion VND for the 2026 – 2030.

The city authorities will issue preferential mechanisms and policies for bolstering the growth of the local marine economy and appealing for even more domestic and FDI inflows into the ports of Tien Sa and Lien Chieu in the years ahead.
