Urgent need of storing water for drinking water supplies due to salinity

General Director of the Da Nang Water Supply Company (DAWACO) Ho Huong said, on 24 and 25 August, the tap water supplies for the city was back to normal. In particular, DAWACO was operating with full of capacity to supply 305,000m3 of freshwater per day to the city’s residents.

However, Mr Huong released that hydropower reservoirs have reduced the water discharge capacity in 3 recent days. This has resulted in the water level of the Vu Gia River lowering, and the salinity level of the Cau Do (Red Bridge) River exceeding the allowed limits of 1,000 mg/l.

It is expected that, today, 26 August, the salinity level of the river will continue increasing if there is no heavy rain at the Vu Gia river basin. This will result in a shortage of tap water for the daily lives of local citizens, and the agricultural and industrial production activities in the city.

In an attempt to handle this matter of deep concern, DAWACO informed the salinity level of the river to the municipal authorities in order to require hydropower plants upstream in the basin of the Vu Gia River to discharge water properly in order to ensure enough water supply for the city.

At the same time, DAWACO has stored 30,000m3 of fresh water in case of the salinity intruding into the Cau Do River again.
