The latest figures from the Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade show that the city is home to 73 traditional markets consisting of 6 first-grade, 19 second-grade, 41 third-grade and 5 temporary ones, with a total of nearly 21,000 small traders operating in these places.

In particular, Hoa Vang District has the highest number of traditional markets in the city with 19, followed by Hai Chau and Thanh Khe districts both with 12, Lien Chieu District with 10, Son Tra District with 9, Cam Le District with 6 and Ngu Hanh Son District with 5.

Although Da Nang is witnessing tremendous growth of modern shopping areas, local residents and visitor arrivals continue to use traditional markets because these places satisfy their shopping needs.

In recent years, many downgraded traditional marketplaces in the city have been upgraded or rebuilt to offer a spacious environment for traders there, hereby providing better services for their shoppers.

The An Hai Bac Market in Son Tra District is a typical example. It was rebuilt in June 2019.

The new market was rebuilt on its former site on an area of 2,541m2. The total cost of the construction work was 13 billion VND. Of this, 6.5 billion VND came from the Son Tra District authorities’ budget, whilst the remainder was raised from traders operating in this marketplace and other sources.

Mr Nguyen Thong, Head of Son Tra District's Construction and Investment Project Management Board, highlighted the significance of rebuilding the An Hai Bac Market in providing a spacious, comfortable and safe trading place for more than 370 traders.

In addition, the Son Tra District authorities are planning to rebuild the Mai Market in Tho Quang Ward, as well as upgrade the Phuoc My and Man Thai markets in the coming time.

In a similar vein, the Da Nang government is planning to set up an agricultural wholesale in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Phuoc Commune, and upgrade the Con Market, in the time ahead.
