The Da Nang authorities have asked for permission from the national government to invite domestic and foreign investors to join the Lien Chieu Port project.

The focus will be on building piers and dykes, container terminals and warehouses, developing areas of transport and logistics, installing equipment used for loading and unloading operations, and creating a modern port city.

The project aims to meet the growing demand for freight transportation, boosting the connectivity in Greater Mekong Subregion, and easing the existing overloading at the Tien Sa Port.

The project is expected to be implemented in the 2020-2024 period.

The municipal Department of Transport has revealed that more than 3,426 billion VND (over 147 million USD) has been poured into the development of shared infrastructure at the Port. Of this, nearly 3 trillion VND is funded by the national government, whilst the remainder comes from the city budget.

Once fully completed, the Lien Chieu Port will become a major wharf area of an international gateway port in the central region, having the capacity to receive ships up to 100,000 dead weight tonnage (DWT), and container ships with capacity from 6,000 to 8,000TEUs. Also, it will handle between 3.5 and 5 million tonnes of cargo every year.
