At the discussion session on actions to achieve a carbon-neutral society, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Nguyen Chuong introduced activities in Da Nang towards the goal of carbon neutrality in the future.
Accordingly, in the fields of greenhouse gas emissions in Viet Nam and Da Nang in particular, energy is the industry with the highest proportion of emissions. Therefore, to achieve the goal of bringing net emissions to ‘zero’ by 2050, the energy transition, replacing coal with wind, solar, gas power and other low emission sources is the goal that Da Nang is aiming for.
Among renewable energy types, solar and biomass energy has great potential and high feasibility.
By the end of 2020, rooftop solar power had been installed with a total capacity of 81.49 MWp. The city will develop the type of solar power on the ground and on land areas that are no longer valuable for economic development.
For biomass energy, the city is proposing the construction of a 15MW biomass power plant (co-generation of thermal power) project. The average annual output of electricity generated to the grid is about 95 million kWh/year.
For the time being, work is progressing well on the solid waste incineration plant project to generate electricity in the Khanh Son landfill with a scale of 650 tonnes/day, which has been approved by the Prime Minister to be added to the revised Power Master Plan VII with a power generation capacity of 18MW.
Over the past time, the city has cooperated with international partners to implement projects to combat climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and aim for a carbon-neutral society.
Currently, the city is also implementing the project ‘Cooperation between Da Nang city and the Japanese city of Yokohama towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral city’ funded by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.
