Da Nang eyes becoming tourism hub, innovative destination by 2030

The Da Nang government has issued the project on orientations for tourism development in Da Nang to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Accordingly, Da Nang eyes becoming a hub for tourism and high-quality services, an innovative destination of Viet Nam and Southeast Asia, by 2030. By 2045, the city targets to turn itself into an Asia's leading travel destination, and one of hubs for high-end, innovative, green, smart beach resort tourism and eco-tourism, and for international-level conferences, festivals and events.

Strive to welcome 13-14 million visitors by 2030

According to the project, the growth rate of revenue from accommodation, travel and food services in the city in the 2021 - 2030 period is about 12.75%/year. The average growth rate of total number of visitors served by accommodation establishments during that period is about 17.63%/year.

In 2030, the total number of visitors served by accommodation establishments is estimated at 13-14 million, 5.8 - 6.3 million of which will be foreigners.

The average length of stay for international tourists in Da Nang is likely to be 3.3 days and that for domestic guests is expected to be 3.1 days. The average spending by the domestic and foreign visitors in the city is estimated at 6.5-7 million VND and 10.5-11 million VND per person.

About 87,400 people are working in the hospitality sector, accounting for about 35% of the total number of the city's working age population.

The project also forecasts that tourism trends in the coming period will be tourism associated with local culture; the difference of destinations; trend tourism; tourism associated with digital technology; nature-based tourism; convalescence, recovery and health care tourism; and green tourism.

Specifically, 2022 - 2025 will be the recovery period of the world tourism industry, predicting that tourists tend to travel with safety requirements, towards the specific natural and cultural values ​​of the destinations.

Then, 2026 - 2030 will be the period of re-development of the tourism industry, and it is forecasted that tourists tend to seek more differences, experiences and services during their trips.

From 2031 - 2045 period, it is predicted that tourists tend to want to discover new and unique things of each destination, in which, from 2040 onwards, the trend of ‘express tourism’ will become popular. The demand for high-class, international-class tourism destinations will be higher.

Regarding development orientations, in the 2022 - 2030 period, Da Nang is determined to focus on 4 groups of key tourist spaces with 9 groups of functional tourism spaces, including a marine tourism space group (space for tourism along the east coast and the Da Nang Bay); a group of urban tourism space (central urban tourism space, hillside tourism space and smart non-tariff city, ‘airport urban’ space and tourist seaport); a group of mountain tourism space (ecotourism space in the east side of the city, ecotourism space in the west side of the city), and a group of interdisciplinary tourism space (tourism space associated with agriculture and rural areas, tourism space associated with innovation).

Between 2030 and 2045, the city will strive to complete the entire infrastructure system for tourism, perfect and fully put into operation 3 groups of typical, main and complementary products in the direction of professionalism, high quality and distinctive features.

Investment in infrastructure and products

With the aforementioned goals, tourism experts have high expectations for the new look of Da Nang's tourism industry with many flourishes.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Director of the Omega Tour Travel Co., Ltd., said that in order to achieve the abovementioned goals, it is necessary for Da Nang to first redefine whether its infrastructure can meet the best service capacity nor not. Also, the city is in need to build tourism products based on existing strengths such as rivers, mountains and sea.

He underlined a must-do for the city to develop more diversified marine sports products than at present, and add more accommodation products on the Da Nang Bay by calling for investors to invest in large-scale yachts or form shopping services.

He, also stressed the need for the tourism industry to have a specific promotion plan to each specific market. In the long-term plan, the plan can be divided into smaller phases while doing and evaluating to draw experience as well as adjust accordingly the city’s directions.

Sharing the same view, Da Nang Tourism Association Secretary General Ho Thanh Tu underlined the necessity for the city to develop high-quality tourism products, associated with the safe and friendly Da Nang tourism brand, with a focus on high-quality eco-tourism and river tourism products, and water sports.

Importance should be attached to boosting tourism promotion activities to key markets, especially high-segment ones from Europe, America, and Australia, as well as organising many events and festivals.

Director of the municipal Department of Tourism Truong Thi Hong Hanh said that in order to ensure the effective implementation of the project, the unit has advised the municipal People's Committee to develop an action plan with 10 key task groups. Included are enhancing State management for tourism activities, forming tourism culture, developing high-quality tourism standards, issuing mechanisms and policies for tourism development, boosting tourism development planning and investment, developing tourism products and markets, promoting digital transformation in tourism activities; training and developing human resources for tourism sector, and fostering linkage and cooperation in tourism development.

Particularly for the goal of luring more visitors to the city, the department will continue to coordinate with relevant departments, agencies, localities and units to deploy solutions to ensure security and order, environmental sanitation, and safety of activities and guests.

Heed will be on preparing human resources, improving service quality, upgrading and investing in new products and services towards ‘high quality’ standards with priority given to high-class and super-luxury products and services, and exploiting international air routes and markets in accordance with the actual situation.
