Variety of vegetables
In recent days, farmers in the city are focusing on sowing new varieties of vegetables to serve the needs of customers during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
In mid-November, the bustling production atmosphere was reported at the La Huong safe vegetable production area in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang.
Taking advantage of the sunny weather, farmer Phan Ngoc Phu residing in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, is plowing land for growing vegetables.
After recent rains and floods, weeds grow quickly on many production areas, so Mr. Phu and other farmers in the area have to plow and improve the land to grow crops, ensuring the productivity and quality of vegetables for the new crop.
This year's Tet crop, the family of Mr. Phu produces about 1 ha of vegetables with a focus on broccolis, collard greens, corianders, cilantros, lettuces, cauliflowers, cucumbers and bitter melons.
“Now the rain and floods will end soon, the reeds have also bloomed, so people are somewhat reassured. Hopefully, the weather will be favorable for vegetables to grow well, and farmers will enjoy a warm and happy Tet" said Mr. Phu.
Sharing the same production atmosphere in the vegetable area, the family of farmer Mai Van Toan living in group 34, Hoa Thuan Dong Ward, Cam Le District are also busy cleaning up production areas and repairing domes and farm tools in order to prepare for the new crop.
According to Mr. Phu, this is the biggest vegetable crop of the year, so farmers pay great attention to ensuring quality and high yield. However, farmers in the area plant regularly varieties of green leafy vegetables to meet the daily needs of locals. Such root vegetables as bitter melons, cucumbers and chayote have been grown by farmers from the 23rd day of the 10th lunar month.
Similarly, farmers in the Tuy Loan safe vegetable production area in Hoa Phong Commune, Hoa Vang District have carefully plowed plots of land since the beginning of the month.
Senior farmer Tran Yen residing in Tuy Loan Tay Village, Hoa Phong Commune, Hoa Vang District, said that in the recent flood, the Tuy Loan safe vegetable production area was heavily flooded with a thick layer of mud on the production land, so Mr. Yen and other farmers had to wait for the land to dry to plow, using lime to improve the soil. So far, the soil treatment has been completed, in the next few days, he will sow Tet vegetables, especially varieties of root vegetables to serve the market demand at year-end.
“Green leafy vegetables will be harvested after 25-30 days of planting. However, it takes nearly 2 months to harvest root vegetables, so if they are not planted in time, we will be late for the crop" said Mr. Yen.

No goods shortage
Besides safe vegetable production areas, hydroponic and high-tech vegetable farms citywide are focusing all their efforts to supply the Tet market.
Mr. Nguyen Thang, Director of the Hoa Vang Vegetable, Flower, Tuber and Fruit Cooperative in Hoa Ninh Commune said that his unit is producing at full capacity in an area of 7,000m2.
This year's Tet season, the cooperative will provide the city with quality and prestigious vegetable varieties sourced from foreign countries, including lettuces in all kinds, spinach, kohlrabi, Japanese and Dutch cucumbers, Dutch tomatoes, and Thai pears.
“The cooperative's agricultural products are supplied to the Da Nang market. Compared to every year, the weather this year is favorable, so I think the vegetable output of the units will ensure the adequate supply and serve the needs of locals during the Tet holiday" said Mr. Thang.
Sharing the same view, Director of the La Huong Safe Vegetable Production Cooperative Tran Van Hoang also said that the rain and flood situation will not affect farmers' vegetable cultivation and production. Currently, farmers in the area are preparing for Tet crops.
However, the cooperative also recommends that farmers do not be subjective, regularly visit the production fields to promptly detect and prevent pests and diseases of vegetables.
According to Ms. Dang Thi Thanh Sang, Deputy Director of the Tuy Loan Safe Vegetables Production and Consumption Service Cooperative, till date, farmers have overcome flood aftermaths and have resumed production in the lowlands with a total area of 4ha. The cooperative’s vegetable yield still ensures enough supply for the market.
Currently, the cooperative is supplying green leafy vegetables to schools, stores selling organic agricultural products, and Co.opmart and Hoa Tho supermarkets. It has signed agreements to promote the supply of vegetables to MM Mega Market Danang and Lotte Mart Danang.
“We currently have 40 official members and 10 associate members to produce and supply all kinds of agricultural products, ensuring to meet the consumer demand of the market. It is forecasted that the source of vegetables during Tet this year will be very abundant, and the price will not fluctuate much" informed Ms. Sang.
