With just over 2 months left until Tet 2023, the bustling cultivation atmosphere has been recorded in some flower growing areas in the city such as Hoa Phat in Cam Le District, Nhon Tho in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Phuoc Commune, and Duong Son in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Chau Commune.Varieties of flowers are being prepared in order to satisfy the needs and tastes of customers.

In the about 3,300m2 Duong Son flower production area in Hoa Chau Commune, Hoa Vang District, Mr. Doan Van Trinh and other farmers are taking care of flower pots in preparation for Tet market 2023.

Mr. Trinh expects to supply the Tet flower market about 1,200 pots of chrysanthemums, 200 pots of marigolds, and 1,000 pots of hanging flowers of all kinds.

“This year sees a hike in all input costs for seeds, fertilisers, pots and labour force, and even some fertilisers have doubled in price. Now we are focusing on taking care of flowers to grow well" Trinh said.

Not far away, Mr. Tran Dung Quoc, the owner of the 3,000m2 hanging flower garden, is making efforts to ensure that their flower crops will reach full bloom exactly during the forthcoming festival.

It is known that hanging flowers in the garden are consumed all year round, so Mr. Quoc has to grow continuously to promptly meet the needs of the market. Due to the increased demand for Tet decorations, he has to rise the number of flowers to supply to the market.

Meanwhile, many farmers in the Van Duong flower production area in Hoa Lien Commune have taken advantage of vacant land lots in the locality to grow flowers.

Mr. Ngo Van Thanh, residing in Van Duong Village, Hoa Lien Commune, said that his family has prepared about 1,300 pots of crystal chrysanthemums and 250 pots of poinsettias for this year’s Tet market. He plans to grow more lilies this weekend so as to serve the growing demand needs of locals during the forthcoming special festival.

Hope for blooming flower crops and good prices

Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang, Head of the Duong Son Flower Production Cooperation Group, said that the Duong Son flower product area has a total of 23 flower-growing households with a total area of 4.5ha. Four of them specialise in growing orchids and hanging flowers, 18 others planting chrysanthemums and flowers of all kinds, and the other growing lotuses.

Farmers plan to provide the Tet flower market with about 15,000 pots of chrysanthemums of all kinds, and about 4,000 pots of marigolds and lilies.

“There is still over one month left until the Lunar New Year 2023, traders from all around the country will start to visit flower gardens to purchase floral products for Tet. This year’s flower prices are likely to increase slightly because of the hike in all input production costs. At this time, flowers have entered an important stage of development, so farmers citywide are focusing on carefully taking care of them. I hope for a good Tet flower crops in order to have more income after a year of hard work" shared Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang.

Similarly, flower growers in Hoa Phuoc Commune are planting about 6,700 pots of chrysanthemums of all kinds, 7,000 square meters of daisies, and 3,000 square meters of heather.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bong, a flower farmer in the Nhon Tho flower growing area, said that since the 10th day of the 8th lunar month, she has planted chrysanthemums which are sourced from Da Lat City.

This year, she plants about 200 pots of daisies, about 70 pots of marigolds and dahlias, and about 300 pots of dwarf marigolds.

Deputy Director of the Da Nang Agriculture Sub-Department Doan Van Bao said that recent storms have affected the growth of flowers, and created favourable conditions for the growth of a number of diseases such as bacterial leaf spot diseases and stem rot.

The Sub-department has already guided localities and farmers to implement pest control measures, as well as promptly handled incidents so as not to affect the farming of farmers.
