The Viet Nam Railways Corporation has sent a written request to the Ministry of Transport to urgently allocate about VND1,332 billion from the central budget for upgrading and reinforcing the railway section through the Hai Van Pass.

Specifically, the money will be spent on reinforcing talus roofs at 20 sections of roads with potential risk of landslides, upgrading 16.31km of railway routes and 15 bridges with total length of 358m, and renovating 3 tunnels with a total length of 1,667m.

Previously, historic rains triggered by Storm SONCA on October 14, 2022 caused serious damage to the railway infrastructure in Central Viet Nam, especially the Hai Van Pass.

On November 1, the delegation of the Ministry of Transport and relevant units assessed the current quality status of railway infrastructure to determine damage in the Hai Van pass area.

The inspection results also showed that about 20 landslide areas damaged a railway section passing through Hai Van Pass, and continued to pose a potential risk of unsafe operation if these are not repaired and reinforced in time.
