Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety launched

The Da Nang Department of Transport in collaboration with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Foundation and the Vital Strategies based in the US held a meeting on Thursday to launch the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS project) in Da Nang for the 2022 - 2025 period.

In attendance at the event were Mr. Nguyen Trung Nghia, the Deputy Director of the Department of Transport; Ms Kelly Larson, the Director of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ road safety programme, Mr. Grant Ennis, the Vital Strategies' Regional Deputy Director for Asia, and representatives of other international partners.

The BIGRS project for the 2022 - 2025 implementation period was approved by the Da Nang People's Committee on October 12, 2022. The municipal Department of Transport shall assume the prime responsibility for coordinating with the relevant agencies and international partners to implement activities towards improving road traffic safety in Da Nang with the support of the Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The objective of the project is to reduce deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents in the city through technical support activities and training in the fields of publicity, law enforcement, traffic infrastructure, traffic information, monitoring and statistics on traffic accident data.

Focus is being placed on preventing the exceeding speed limits and drink driving; raising public awareness of properly wearing of helmets when riding motorcycles, mopeds, electric bicycles, electric scooters and wearing seat belts when travelling in cars; supporting the upgrading and improvement of traffic infrastructure for road safety enhancement; ensuring safety for road users by improving travel conditions; collecting, analysing and building a database system as a basis for proposing solutions to prevent road traffic accidents.

It is known that after Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang is the next locality in Viet Nam and is one of the 28 cities worldwide participating in the BIGRS project, forming a global network with a shared commitment to reducing road crash fatalities and injuries.

At the meeting, the participants expressed their hope that the activities within the framework of the BIGRS project will be successfully and effectively implemented in the near future.
