On March 25, 2021, the Vietnamese Prime Minister approved the investment policy for the shared infrastructure development of the Lien Chieu Port. This is a Group A project managed by the Da Nang People's Committee.
On April 18, 2022, the Da Nang Government approved a project to adjust the detailed planning of the Lien Chieu seaport and the coastal road connecting the seaport on a total area of nearly 470 hectares.
According to the adjustments, the seaport covers an area of 450ha, bordering the Hai Van Pass to the north, the Cu De river mouth to the south, the Da Nang Bay to the east and a bypass south of the Hai Van road tunnel to the west.
The Lien Chieu Wharf project is one of the Da Nang key projects with 19 bidding packages with a total investment of VND3,426 billion.
It is known that the shared infrastructure construction will feature piers and dykes, container terminals and warehouses, developing areas of transport and logistics, equipment used for loading and unloading operations, and trans-shipment services for an annual capacity of handling a combined total of 3.5 to 5 million tonnes of cargo.
The new port could receive cargo ships of up to 100,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) and container ships with loading capacities from 6,000 to 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs), plus 10,000 DTW liquid cargo vessels. Dykes and Breakwaters are about 1,170m long. The channel is about 7.3km long and 160m wide, the dredged bottom elevation is -14.0m. The navigational signaling system will be arranged.

Lien Chieu Port is planned as a Grade -1 port and in the future will be a special one. Especially, once fully operational, the Lien Chieu Port will have port operation space organised in an open direction with the highlight of the office architecture and the operating house combined with modern technology and equipment supporting the loading and unloading of large-sized goods.
According to the master plan on the development of Viet Nam's seaport system for the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision towards 2050, approved by the Prime Minister, the Da Nang seaport is the largest in the central region and one of the three largest and key seaports in Viet Nam.
According to Mr. Le Van Lam, Chief of Office of the Da Nang Traffic Safety Board, the Lien Chieu Port is very necessary for clearing heavy traffic in the inner city, thereby helping to turn the existing Tien Sa Port into a tourist port soon. The Lien Chieu Port has the function of serving inter-regional and national socio-economic development and becoming potential international gateway port in the Central Coast.
Director of the Da Nang Management Board of Priority Infrastructure Investment Projects Le Thanh Hung assessed that the commencement of the Lien Chieu Port is an important event to promote the attraction of investment flows for synchronously building the Lien Chieu Port - an international gateway port in the central coastal area to strengthen intra- and inter-regional connectivity. This is a lever contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of Da Nang and the region as a whole in the near future.
