The wave of foreign investment has brought many opportunities to the information technology (IT) labour market in Viet Nam, of which engineers and technology specialists are the direct beneficiaries. From the time he was a university, Pham Tan Luc, a resident in Xuan Ha Ward, Thanh Khe District has equipped himself with the necessary skills.

After graduation, with a good degree in IT and N2 certificate in Japanese, he was recruited by many businesses. Up to now, even though he has only worked for 2 months, he has been promoted to the position of team leader, so his salary has also been increased.

“Working in foreign companies and enterprises, especially Japanese ones, has a very high opportunity for promotion when they focus on assessing their employees’ ability and completion of work. Those who have sufficient qualifications and professional experience, proficiency in many languages, like Japanese used in my company, will get the chance”, said Luc.

In tech firms, human resources are mainly young workers under the age of 30. Mr. Vu Hong Son, a resident in Thanh Khe Dong Ward, Thanh Khe District is currently receiving a monthly salary of more than US$1,300/month (about VND 30 million) for his job as a mobile application developer at an IT company.

It is known that after studying and obtaining certificates in Japanese and English, Mr. Son applied to his current company and received a high salary, along with flexible working time.

IT is a growing industry with a very high demand for human resources and is always in the top of industries with high wages and income. Therefore, many companies in the tech sector still face difficulties in recruiting high-quality workers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, the Director of Rikai Da Nang Technology Co., Ltd., said that although she has searched for IT human resources since the post- COVID-19, but so far, only less than 50% of the company’s recruitment target has been met.

In fact, although the number of graduates every year from universities and colleges is very large, Japanese tech firms can not fulfill their recruitment targets because such a human resource is large but it is still of low quality, not meeting job demands while technology companies always require young employees, good technicians who are fluent in foreign languages, especially English and Japanese.

Still worse, when completing training courses at these companies, some employees  tend to leave for other businesses which promise them higher remunerations.

With a high level of remunerations as compared to the salary level in Viet Nam, along with flexible working hours for engineers and technologists, many companies operating in the field of technology are trying to be highly attractive to the job market.

Mr. Ho Nguyen Quoc Hung, the Director of the Da Nang branch of Rikkeisoft JSC said that despite having posted information for many months on different channels, the company still could not recruit workers as expected.

It is known that to be able to applied for jobs, employees need to know at least two foreign languages, namely Japanese and English. As for management positions, programmers need to be able to communicate fluently in Japanese and English and work experience of 2 years or more.

However, the number of employees who passed the recruitment round is very small, only meeting about 50% of the current human resource needs.

“We are willing to pay a starting salary of more than US$1,500 /month (about VND47 million) and many other attractive benefits but it is still difficult to recruit. Currently, we have to train foreign languages for human resources available at the company. Employees who successfully complete courses on foreign language and skills will have their salaries increased according to their capacity and ability. This is a temporary solution that we are applying before we can find resources in the future”, said Hung.

As reported by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tin, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jobkey JSC, a partner providing personnel for many foreign technology enterprises in Da Nang, the wave of digital transformation is taking place strongly, not only technology businesses but also traditional ones entering the e-commerce model. Companies do not hesitate to create attractive incentives to woo highly- qualified human resources.

Although the supply of manpower made by educational institutions and centres is quite abundant, businesses have to carefully select suitable personnel in terms of capacity, culture, critical thinking and foreign languages that match the company's operation orientations. There is no denying that the demand for IT personnel will go up in the coming years.
