Specialised streets selling flowers and ornamental plants: stable prices, declining purchasing power
In addition to the ongoing Tet flower markets, specialised streets selling flowers and ornamental plants such as Le Dai Hanh in Cam Le District and Nguyen Dinh Tuu in Thanh Khe District have been crowded with buyers in these days leading up to the Tet Festival 2023. As noted, this year’s purchasing power is slower than last year’s.

As observed on January 17 morning (the 26th day of the 12th lunar month), the bustling trading ambience was recorded on Le Dai Hanh Street. All kinds of flowers to decorate Tet such as apricots, orchids, succulents, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, rhododendrons and hanging flowers are on sale at shops on the street. In which, orchids are the most popular.
Through the survey, orchids cost VND450,000 - VND500,000/pot, hanging orchids are priced at between VND180,000 and VND250,000/basket, rhododendrons are being sold at the prices of VND300,000 - VND350,000/pot, and the price of a pot of bonsai rhododendrons is VND500,000.
Moreover, flower and ornamental plant shops are offering orchid arrangement services as requested. The pots of these orchids are priced from VND1 million to VND30 million depending on the number of branches on one pot.
According to owners of the flower and bonsai shops, this year’s purchasing power is slower than last year, whilst sales volume decreases by about 30%.
Nguyen Dinh Tuu Street is now home to more than 90 shops selling flowers, ornamental plants, planting materials, handicraft products, and souvenirs.
Mrs. Le Thi Luu, the owner of the orchid shop Phong Luu on Nguyen Dinh Tuu Street, said that due to a decrease in supply, the price of orchids increases by about 20% compared to normal days.
“This year, customers bought flowers quite early from the beginning of the 12th lunar month. Most customers choose to buy pre-assembled pots to present as Tet gift. However, this year’s purchasing power of flowers is slower than last year’s, the number of flowers sold is down by about 20% compared to the occasion of Tet in 2022” said Ms. Luu.
People bought Tet flowers one week ago to choose beautiful flower baskets. Shops have to regularly replenish several kinds of flowers to attract more customers. In addition, some flowers have a slight increase in price due to a lack of supply.
