According to the Da Nang Bridge and Road Science and Technology Association, the current status of planning of the airport urban subdivision is located in the middle of the city centre with a length of 3.5km in the north-south direction, separating the coastal area, Han River, the downtown area with green core and hillside subdivisions.

However, for local development, in addition to renovating and embellishing the central area in the direction of a ‘compact city’ model, expanding the city to the west requires the arrangement of underground traffic routes through the airport.

On the other hand, it is expected that by 2045, Da Nang's population will increase more than 2 times and tourism will become a key industry that will lead to a hike in the number of tourist coaches and urban service vehicles.

Along with that, according to the current planning, public transport routes running from the city centre to the western area are also separated by the airport.

Therefore, in order to solve the above-mentioned inadequacies, the the Da Nang Bridge and Road Science and Technology Association proposed two locations to build tunnels through the airport as follows.

Tunnel No. 1: the route starts at the Vo Nguyen Giap - Vo Van Kiet intersection -> Vo Van Kiet -> Dragon Bridge -> Nguyen Van Linh -> Tunnel No. 1 -> Nguyen Cong Hang -> Le Sao -> (the Le Sao - Hoa Minh intersection) -> West Ring Road No. 2.

Tunnel No. 2: the route starts at the Vo Nguyen Giap - Ho Xuan Huong intersection-> Ho Xuan Huong -> National Highway 14B -> Tien Son Bridge -> National Highway 14B -> Xo Viet Nghe Tinh -> Tunnel No. 2 -> West Ring Road No. 2. -> national highway 14B.

According to experts, the construction of the two tunnels mentioned above creates new roads crossing the airport in the most optimal position not only effectively serves the transport of goods and passengers but it also promotes the advantages of these two routes.

In particular, Nguyen Van Linh Street that connects with the airport will help Da Nang most effectively promote its economic potential, diverse landscapes and unique architectural works to residents, tourists and investors as attract all of them to city’s western part by this nearest, most beautiful and busiest road in the city.

With the adjustment of the tunnel planning through the airport, it will bring great benefits to the four urban subdivisions, namely the Han River and its eastern bank, the airport urban, central green core and hillside subdivisions in a bid to accelerate the city’s sustainable development.
