Da Nang opens up new space to seaport and logistics services
Da Nang will start construction of the Hoa Lien - Tuy Loan expressway in the third quarter of this year while construction work will begin in the fourth quarter on the Hoa Nhon logistics service center in Hoa Vang District. Thus, a short time after the Lien Chieu Port officially broke ground in December 2022, a series of the related major projects have been deployed across the city, thereby facilitating the city to enter new cycle of its development.

1787 marked Da Nang’s golden milestone on the world’s maritime trade routes with notes on a map showing that Da Nang Bay was the most convenient port for the world’s largest merchant vessels arriving.
After being separated from the former Quang Nam - Da Nang Province on January 1, 1997, Da Nang has experienced very rapid growth, and it has become a modern and dynamic city. In particular, the city’s infrastructure and seaports which were developed hundreds of years ago play an important role in driving its growth. The Tien Sa Port has developed into an international marine gateway in Central Viet Nam for a long time.
However, the movement of goods through the existing port does not catch up with the city’s economic growth. The main disadvantage is that goods reaching the existing port directly through road transportation in Da Nang’s inner city resulted in traffic congestion, adversely affecting people's lives and socio-economic development and tourism environment in the city. In addition, the existing port is not able to operate on a larger scale as its logistics services will face challenges due to being unable to expand its warehouse system.
The Politburo’s Resolution No. 43 on the development of Da Nang to 2030, with a vision to 2045 identified the city’s goal to become a hub of economic and social activities in Viet Nam and Southeast Asia, as well as a logistics hub and a seaport city. Along with that, a national master plan on the development of Viet Nam's seaport system in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, identifies Da Nang’s seaport system as the largest of its kind in Central Viet Nam. This plan also identifies Lien Chieu Port as the main wharf in the region and an international gateway that will facilitate cargo movement at local, regional, and global levels.
Currently, the Lien Chieu Port is under construction with the aim of maximizing the advantages of its position located on the gateway of the East-West economic corridor, near the national highway, along the Ho Chi Minh trail and the North-South railway line. In the future, the new port is expected to become a gateway to the Central region thanks to integration of transport modes.
In its first phase, the new port will be able to handle 5 million tons of cargos per year in a bid to ease the overload at the Tien Sa Port. Therefore, it is necessary for the city to build the Hoa Nhon logistics service center in efforts to enable synchronization of investment to facilitate the development of a seamless network connecting seaports and logistics services.
This project has been granted a certificate of investment registration. Accordingly, construction work will begin in the fourth quarter of this year on the Hoa Nhon logistics service center covering an area of 20 hectares in Hoa Vang District. The new development will specialize in organizing the transportation of goods from manufacturers to consumers, storing cargo and container freight, acting as a broker for the consumption of goods in bonded warehouses, and brokering assessment, insurance, along with recycling, reinforcing and, packaging goods.
The Hoa Nhon logistics service center is identified as a ‘dry port’ an inland terminal directly connected to the port by a wide range of transport related services.
This project has great development potential as it is situated near the North-South Expressway, as well as close to the city’s industrial parks. More specifically, the Hoa Nhon logistics service center and two seaports namely Tien Sa and Lien Chieu will form an equilateral triangle angle to help maximize the efficiency of port performance.
It can be said that a range of new developments across the city, including seaports, roads, warehouses showcases concrete and practical steps to realize the strategic goals defined in the Politburo’s Resolution No. 43 in the new period. At the same time, this will get Da Nang on the right track to become a hub of logistics services, high-tech industry, and supporting industries, along with a seaport city, and one of best coastal city in the world, thereby ensuring the city's role as Central Viet Nam and Central Highlands' growth nucleus.
The Hoa Nhon logistics service center project is expected to create positive changes in this rural area to develop it into a town in the coming years in order to open up a new space to the development in the western part of the city. Hopefully, the new developments in the city will create a breakthrough not only in the transportation and logistics industry but also in the tourism and travel-related services in the new period. Besides, the new developments will help the city develop its international trade network in a multi-faceted way in an effort to outpace the growth of the city, and the central region as a whole.
