After the 7-day Lunar New Year 2024 holiday break, the Da Nang market has returned to normal with abundant goods. Given the fact that the supply of goods is prepared by production and business enterprises before Tet, the source of goods is diverse and abundant, and encouragingly, the price is quite stable, meeting local people's needs.

At this time, some highly consumed items such as vegetables, seafood, meat, eggs, do not witness much price fluctuation. As recorded at some traditional markets across the city, the price of vegetables has not increased compared to normal days.

Specifically, carrots are now sold at VNS10,000 - VND13,000/kg, cabbage VND10,000/kg, celery VND10,000 - VND15,000/bunch, chrysanthemum VND7,000 - VND10,000 /bundle, spinach about VND 10,000/bundle.

Up to now the prices of chicken, beef, and pork products are have not increased but purchasing power is low. Accordingly, the price per kg of beef is set at VND250,000 - VND280,000, pork VND100,000 - VND120,000, chicken VND115,000 - VND140,000.

Ms. Hoang Lan Anh, a meat trader at the Bac My An Market said that many families are still stockpiling many types of meat during Tet, so purchasing power is not high. The existing supply is enough to meet people's needs, so we do not stockpile more to avoid a backlog. Many shops trading in household items, fashion or service businesses have not yet reopened.

Many people have plans for a long holiday, so purchasing power in the city is low. Particularly, seafood products have increased purchasing power due to changing demand for food after Tet.

For instance, scad fish costs VND80,000 - VND 90,000/kg, shrimp VND200,000 - VND 250,000 /kg, depending on the type. In particular, the prices of some fruit types such as tangerines, apples and bananas or offerings have increased slightly by 5 - 10% compared to the usual price due to the demand for worship at the beginning of the year.

Since 15 February, along such streets as Chau Thi Vinh Te, Nguyen Van Thoai, Tran Cao Van, Ha Huy Tap and Pham Nhu Xuong, the number of operating shops has accounted for over 80%. Many spots that serve Da Nang specialties such as Quang noodles and vermicelli with fish balls attracted large numbers of diners.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, the owner of a food store on Chau Thi Vinh Te Street, My An Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District said that the number of customers on February 15 and 16 increased by 200-300% compared to days before Tet. Accordingly, the prices of dishes have also increased by an average of VND5,000/dish to balance revenue and expenditure.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Hien from Ha Khe Ward, Thanh Khe District said that after the Lunar New Year holiday break, many stores and catering establishments have increased the price of dishes by 15-25% on the menu.

The Da Nang Market Management Department is coordinating with other units such as the municipal departments of Industry and Trade, Police, and the Taxation Bureau to strengthen inspections and handle any business and production establishment that violates regulations on the transparency in prices and origin of products after the 2024 Lunar New Year in a bid to ensure an open and healthy business environment.

Da Nang’s total retail sales of goods in February 2024 are estimated to reach more than VND 5,700 billion, up nearly 11% over the same period last year. Accumulated in the first 2 months of this year, the figure is likely to have been VND11,709 billion, an increase of more than 8% over the year-ago period. The number of customers and purchasing power at supermarkets, shopping centres, stores, chain stores in the days before Tet increased 25 - 35% compared to normal days.

At traditional markets, the number of visitors also increased by 10 - 20% compared to normal days, with a high consumption recorded on such items as candy, jam, fresh flowers and fruit.

Many activities and events on trade promotion and shopping stimulation have been organised in the city to serve people's needs during Tet such as Spring Fair, Vietnamese Hoa Vang Tet Festival, Trade Union Tet Market and Spring Flower Festival, along with many promotional programmes of organisations and businesses, diverse and abundant goods.

The Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade has proactively worked with essential goods suppliers, shopping centres, supermarkets and large markets to prepare reserves of goods for Tet with a total estimated value of about VND 2,580 billion.
