Da Nang tourism witnesses impressive growth

In 2024, Da Nang’s tourism industry shows many improvements and is a bright spot in the city’s economic development. The total number of visitors served by accommodation establishments in the city is estimated at 10.75 million, up 45% against 2023, exceeding 28% compared to the 2024 plan assigned by the municipal People's Committee.

Many impressive results

Da Nang welcomed an estimate of 4.1 million international visitors, 2 times higher than the same period in 2023, exceeding 64% compared to the 2024 plan; and 6.65 million domestic tourists, up 23% over the same period in 2023, exceeding the 2024 plan by 12%.

Revenue from accommodation, catering and travel service in 2024 is likely to have hit more than VND 34,000 billion, up 25% year-on-year, exceeding the 2024 plan by 13%. Top 10 International tourist source markets accounting for a large proportion of Da Nang are South Korea (40.55%), Taiwan (China) (10.3%), China (6.75%), Thailand (6.43%), India (5.01%), the US (4.21%), Japan (3.96%), Malaysia (2.92%), Australia (2.43%), and Russia (1.72%).

Currently, there are 7 domestic air routes and 16 regular international air routes to Da Nang, with an average frequency of 111 flights/day, including 52 international and 59 domestic flights. The city is expected to receive over 40,000 flights to Da Nang throughout the year, of which over 19,000 are international flights and more than 21,000 are domestic flights, representing a rise of 1.1% compared to 2023 and a recovery of 81.8% compared to 2019. The number of air passengers in 2024 is likely to have been more than 6.5 million, up 5.4% year-on-year and recovering 84.3% compared to 2019.

During the year, the city reopened domestic flights to Buon Ma Thuot and Phu Quoc, and international flights to Vientiane (Laos) and Ahmedabad (India). It promoted the opening of new flights (Cheongju - Korea, Taichung - Taiwan, China). In addition, Malaysia Airlines-operated the Kuala Lumpur - Da Nang air route, and the Hong Kong Airlines-operated Hong Kong (China) - Da Nang air route, were launched.

Meanwhile, the city is expected to welcome 643,108 passengers by train, up 43.5% against 2023, and 41,000 visitors by ship up 122%.

Tourism products which have been developed by the city and businesses achieved impressive results. In particular, the city has seen a year-on-year increase of 13.4% in the number of tourists using inland waterway tourism services in 2024 to stand at 939,675. Meanwhile, the city has recorded a good growth of cruise ship passenger with 41,000 arrivals from Europe, the US, China and Australia, an increase of 122% compared to 2023.

Notably, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, wedding tourism, and golf tourism have created attraction for the destination of Da Nang. During the year, the city is predicted to have welcomed 200 MICE delegations with a total of more than 70,000 guests, including 85 domestic delegations with more than 35,000 visitors and 115 international delegations with over 35,000 visitors, an increase of 29% compared to 2023.

Da Nang has been chosen by overseas Vietnamese brides and grooms, and couples from India, Australia, Japan, Taiwan (China), Singapore, and the US to organise wedding ceremonies. In particular, there have been four large weddings of Indian couples with more than 1,200 guests.

Efforts to build destinations

According to Director of the Da Nang Department of Tourism Truong Thi Hong Hanh, in the past year, the city leaders have provided timely support to boost the local tourism development and remove difficulties and obstacles in tourism activities.

The municipal People's Committee has directed the Department of Tourism to advise on the specific orientations and strategies for tourism development with 4 key plans: tourism development plan for 2024; plan to implement Resolution No. 82/NQ-CP of the Government on key tasks and solutions to accelerate recovery, and effective and sustainable tourism development in Da Nang; plan to implement the project on developing inland waterway tourism in the city; and plan to implement Directive No. 08/CT-TTg of the Government on comprehensive, rapid and sustainable tourism development in the coming time in Da Nang.

In addition, there are projects and plans for developing tourism products, organising festivals and events, and integrating Da Nang tourism orientation into Viet Nam’s tourism system planning for the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2045.

On that basis, the tourism industry has implemented many activities to make Da Nang continue to be an attractive, safe, green, clean, beautiful and friendly destination. The city has organised many national and international activities, events and festivals such as the International Fireworks Festival, the Da Nang Asian Film Festival, the Da Nang International Marathon, the IRONMAN Competition, the Viet Nam - Brazil Football Festival, the ASEAN School Games, the Da Nang Enjoy Festival, the BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang, etc.

At the same time, nighttime tourism products are new and unique, including Bach Dang Walking Street, Da Nang Downtown Complex with attractive shows, the Da Nang Beach Flower Street, the fire-breathing and water-squirting shows at the Dragon Bridge, and artistic musical water fountain show at March 29 Square.

The tourism environment continues to be guaranteed to be secure, safe, green, clean, beautiful and highly appreciated by tourists. In particular, the event of billionaire Bill Gates and legendary tennis player Roger Federer visiting Da Nang has brought brand value, enhanced the position of Da Nang destination, increased media effects, and spread the image of Da Nang tourism.
