Located along the Cu De River, the Truong Dinh shrimp farming area of over 30 hectares in the namesake village, Hoa Lien Commune, Hoa Vang District, features 25 farming households.

After 25 years of establishment, this shrimp farming area has brought high economic efficiency, improving the lives of local people. These days, Mr. Do Truc and many other farmers village are focusing on drainage combined with dredging pond bottom mud, and killing disease-causing bacteria with lime.

Mr. Truc plans to release 350,000 shrimp larvae in two ponds of over 8,000m2 in total. After completing the pond renovation, he continued to treat the water to ensure the pH level reached the standard before releasing the shrimp.

“Each shrimp farming season usually lasts from 2.5 to 3 months. The season after Tet is the most important for farmers because this is a favourable time for shrimp to develop, limiting the impact of the weather. The number of shrimp released in this season is also 40% higher than the next season,” Mr. Truc shared.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Van Ky has just released 200,000 shrimps for 5 days on a more than 4,000m2 pond. He has invested in two aeration turbine systems to ensure good growth for the shrimp, with each system worth VND 20 million.

Mr. Ky said “If you want shrimp to develop, grow quickly and limit the outbreak of diseases, the renovation and bacteria removal stages are very important in the farming process. In addition, the pond water environment is a factor that affects the health and productivity of shrimp. In the most recent crop, I harvested 3 tons of commercial shrimp. Each ton earned VND100-120 million, thereby helping me and the people in the area stabilize their economic life".

Mr. Vo Van Thanh, Head of Truong Dinh Village, said that up to now, most households in the area have completed the renovation of ponds, some households have started releasing shrimp seeds early. This crop, people in the area released about 2 million shrimp seeds. This is the main production crop of the year, with higher productivity and output than other times.

With two crops per year, the average output in the area is 40 tons/year. The average total revenue of households is VND200-300 million/year, with an average net profit of VND100-150 million/year.

Recently, the municipal Bureau of Fisheries has recommended that shrimp farmers regularly monitor weather and environmental developments; as well as prepare farming conditions carefully and stock shrimp at a density appropriate to the pond area.

Meanwhile, in the freshwater fish farming area of Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Khuong Commune, the stages of pond renovation, changing water for ponds, rebuilding eroded banks and preparing quality fry have been basically completed.

Mr. Dinh Van Bay residing in Hoa Khuong Commune has been raising hybrid catfish for more than 10 years in a nearly 4,000m2 pond.

There are over 350 households raising various types of freshwater fish in Hoa Khuong Commune, with a water surface area of over 62 hectares. Aquaculture output in the area has also grown steadily each year.

Mr. Nguyen Ke Hiep, Vice Chairman of Hoa Khuong Commune People's Committee, said that the output of the crop for Tet has been basically harvested, so people are renovating ponds to release fish fry again according to the crop schedule. The locality is actively coordinating with relevant units to supply quality fish fry to farming households.

“The commune has had many solutions to strengthen the connection between aquaculture households and cooperatives in the area. The locality will continue to develop concentrated fish farming areas in the direction of biosafety, environmental protection combined with eco-tourism, enhancing the value of Hoa Khuong freshwater fish products”, Mr. Hiep informed.

According to statistics, Hoa Vang District currently has over 126.5 hectares of aquaculture area with 481 households developing freshwater aquaculture models. In recent years, many farming households have boldly applied high technology, and invested in a synchronous and modern technical infrastructure system, bringing high economic efficiency. Accordingly, the average aquatic product output in the district is 815 tons/year. In 2024, the district's aquaculture production value reached VND 72 billion, an increase of 4.5% over the same period in 2023.

To ensure good quality of seeds for this year's aquaculture crop, the People's Committee of Hoa Vang District recommends that farmers pay attention to the stocking density, pond care and management, and transportation techniques.

In the coming time, Hoa Vang District will continue to develop aquaculture in the direction of intensive farming, commodity production, strengthening linkages, supporting each other in capital, seeds, techniques and product consumption to improve production efficiency as well as develop aquaculture in a safe and sustainable direction.
