Severe shortage of musical performances
Over recent years, Da Nang has seen positive signs in local cultural activities. However, people involved in the city’s arts sector, especially singers, are currently in need of a vibrant and thriving musical environment so that they can demonstrate their devotion to local music lovers.
In addition to the local bars, music-themed cafés and discotheques which put on nightly musical shows for their customers, Da Nang now has major venues suitable for musical performances. They are the Trung Vuong Theatre, the Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatre, the city’s Cultural Centre, the Tien Son Sports Arena, and the Labour Culture House. However, only large-scaler events tend to be held at these venues.
The city is now facing a severe shortage of well-organised, smaller-scale musical programmes to attract audiences, and local singers are now finding it hard to make ends meet.
Over recent years, many talented singers from the city and Quang Nam Province, such as Anh Tuyet, My Tam, Dam Vinh Hung, Kasim Hoang Vu and Le Cat Trong Ly, have moved to the bigger cities of Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City in order to develop their careers. Meanwhile, other singers who are determined to remain in Da Nang to pursue their passion for music have proved to be less popular with local residents. Many local singers are left to perform at local music-themed cafés, and they only receive between 60,000 VND and 70,000 VND for each song they perform. Some of them have even decided to give up their jobs due to the low income.
It seems essential to increase the number of musical programmes in the city, with professional event organisers involved. Most important of all, local residents need a change of attitude towards local artistes and musical programmes.
