DA NANG Today
Published: June 22, 2015

On Sunday, as many as 200 Yoga lovers from across Da Nang attended an event at the city’s Quan The Am (Avalokitecvara) Pagoda at 48 Su Van Hanh street to mark the 1st International Day of Yoga.  Also present at the event were the Secretary of the Party Committee of the municipal government agencies, Mr Huynh Van Hoa, and the Vice Chairman of the local Fatherland Front Committee, Mr Nguyen Dang Hai.

During the event, the benefits of Yoga and the meaning of the International Day of Yoga were outlined by the Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Ha Noi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr Do Thu Ha.  In addition, there was a Yoga performance by local Yoga trainers and trainees.

Only 55 days since a resolution was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly proclaiming 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, 177 of the 193 UN member states joined as co-sponsors of the resolution and celebrated this activity.

It is believed that Yoga originated in India about 5,000 years ago.  In Da Nang, Yoga started to become popular in February 1996 when it was taught daily by an Indian teacher to his first practitioners on Thanh Binh beach.
